History of the White German Shepherd

The White Shepherd is a direct decedent of
the German Shepherd dog. In the first half of the twentieth century, German cavalry officer Max von Stephanitz, created the German Shepherd Dog using a variety of German sheepdogs as his foundation stock. Color did not matter
as long as the dog demonstrated working abilities.
In the late 1930's the color white fell
into disfavor.

Registries and Reconization

UKC recognizes both the White German Shepherd and the White Shepherd. FCI recognizes the breed as a White Swiss Shepherd. With both of the registries they are allowed to show and compete in events.
AKC however recognizes them as
a White German Shepherd and does not
allow them to compete in conformation events but they are allowed to compete in preformece events.
The White Gene
The white gene is not a dilute gene, such as liver and blue, but it is a masking gene. A masking gene hides the real color and pattern of the dog. A WGSD can be any color and pattern found in the GSD breed. The Gene only express white coat color and is not related to poor health, temperament or any other part of the dog's genetic makeup. The white gene is recessive, meaning that you can breed a black and tan that carries for white to a black and red that carries for white and end up with white puppies along with standard color puppies, as both parents carry one copy of the gene that causes the white to be expressed. You can breed a dog that carries the white gene to a dog that doesn't and produce puppies that carry the gene but do not express the gene.

Common Questions
Are they Family dogs?
Yes they can be. All though they are bred to work they love spending time with their people.
Are they good with small children?
Yes, you have to introduce your puppy to your children at a young age to allow them to become used to them. You must teach your child how to properly treat a dog or having one can be a negative experience for both your child and the puppy. You will have to correct both your child and puppy to ensure that both grow up with a positive experience.
Are they good protection dogs?
A German Shepherd's instincts are to protect their pack/herd. Yes they will alert when their are dangers such as other animals or strange people near. If you are looking for a dog to train to be a protection dog and earn their IGP titles contact us to discuss what you are looking for.
Can I breed my dog before spaying and neutering?
No, if you buy a dog as a pet on limited registration you are not allowed to breed the dog. If your vet says the dog needs to produce a litter before being spayed/neutered we recommend getting a second or third opinion as we do not allow this. There is no scientific proof that breeding before spaying/neutering will make difference in the dogs overall health, temperament, or personality. Just because you think your dog would produce pretty puppies or you think your dog would be a great parent, does not mean they should be bred as this does not better the breed.
What coat colors do you breed?
Currently Double H German Shepherds only breeds the color white. We only produce white puppies.
What Health testing do you do on the parents?
We currently do hip and elbow x-rays through OFA and we DM test. We also test for MDR1, multi drug resistance.
What do I have to do to get breeding rights?
In very rare cases in which we sell breeding rights we require that the puppy have its health testing done, hips and elbow scores done by OFA or a equivalent organization such as PennHip or BVA. We require at least a DM and MDR1 test and at least a UKC CH or GRCH title in Conformation and at least one performance title from any kennel club to show versatility.
Do you breed service dogs?
Currently that is not our breeding programs goal. It requires allot to become a service dog, so it is all about choosing the right puppy because not all dogs are meant to be service dogs. If you are interested in a service dog candidate from us contact us and we will help you find a suitable puppy from one of our litters or we will help you find another breeder that has a candidate that fits the requirements.
Will you produce any long coat Puppies?
We have the chance to produce any coat length from short to long coat and everything in between.
